Why do I only play as one character, especially a healer in every game?

I'm pretty absent from/on(?) this site. My main hangout place is my YouTube channel:

(Never mind the rest of the site. It's old, unupdated, partially broken, etc)

Jump to the end for the
TL;DR.

As I get asked this a lot, I decided to post my answers here, so I can link to this blog/text-thingy whenever someone asks. Only bothered to do Q/A for Overwatch. Will mention only the more important games.

Overwatch
Playing as Mercy. I'm level 960, got about 876 hours of total playtime, which is not much as I've been playing since day one. I'm not playing that much, busy with other things, people are already level 3500+. All these hours are with Mercy... except like 5 seconds, which are shared between Reinhardt, Mei and Zarya as the game forced them on me due to various reasons. Today I know how to avoid this and will hopefully not get thrown into the game again with some random hero.

Q/A:

Q1: Why do you only play as Mercy?
A1: I decided in the early days of WoW (10+ years ago) that I will only play as a healer. The reason for this is I don't want to die too easily and didn't want to play as a tank. One thing that surprised me about Overwatch was that I can't heal MYSELF. There's only a passive heal that activates 1 sec (was 3) after I've been out of combat (medkit stuff lying around doesn't count). In all other games I've played as a healer, the healer can heal him-/herself. So, for once, I can't play as a tanky healer. I will still only play as a healer though, and chose Mercy as she's female and the TRUE healer, IMO. She's got an angel-like look with her wings and a halo. Even her name is has "angel" in it: Angela. Also, a healer that can't resurrect is no proper healer :), which excluded the other healers from the get-go.

Q2: Why only play as females? Are you gay?
A2: This is literally what people ask. I've gotten this gay question too many times. Am I gay? Nope. I prefer to play female as they are prettier to look at and listen to, rather than some disgusting dude and their grunts, bleh. IMO, it's more gay to play males :)

Q3: What do you do if someone picks Mercy before you?
A3: I just ask if I can play her instead. If I can't, I just wait until I get kicked from inactivity. This is how I got 5 sec on Zarya - I couldn't play as Mercy so pressed ESC to get to the menu so I could leave, but pressing ESC after the character selection timer is over THROWS me into the game with whatever character is selected. So, now, just in case, I simply wait to get kicked instead of pressing/clicking anything.

Q4: Why don't you play competitive?
A4: It's not my thing. I like to chill and have fun, which I wouldn't as it's all too serious (not saying I'm not doing my best to win in QP, but it's still more relaxed) AND voice talk (VoIP) is usually required. Another reason is I don't want to split my hours into different game modes. I rather have all hours in one mode (QP).

Q5: So you don't want to play competitive... but don't you want the golden weapon/staff skins?
A5: Nope. I'm not interested in the golden weapon skins for Mercy. I'm using her Amber skin which makes both her outfit and weapon match each other. If I used the gold skin for the staff/weapon, it wouldn't match her outfit as good as Amber does. If I wanted it I would have had it in S2 already.

Q6: Speaking of voice talk. Why don't you want to talk? Shy?
A6: Nah, I'm not shy. It's more relaxing not hearing anyone and not having to say anything myself. I can listen to music while playing and stuff without someone disturbing me. Also, I prefer to record all my videos voice free, which is why I have the voice thingy off and can't hear anyone during play. Was one of the first settings I sat when I first installed the game. Some people have noticed I don't reply to their questions so they ask me in the chat why I didn't reply; or they understood I had it off and told me what someone said to me. One time there was someone who wanted an interview with me as they found it fascinating I only played as one character (quite literally, unlike most other players). I declined as I'm too lazy :) (check "EDIT #3" further below, did a change)

Q7: I've noticed you don't change your skin, icon, emote, etc. Why not?
A7: Just like with picking just one hero and staying with that forever without trying anyone else, I do the same with cosmetics. I did use a different skin from the very start as I maybe didn't know how to change it or didn't have the Amber one. But shortly after I started playing I picked the stuff I wanted and haven't changed since. I change the voice lines sometimes just for fun, but nothing else. Most Mercys I see uses the Witch skin, which I only used during a short Halloween video. Yeah, it looks cool, but I want to look like a healer, and not like a witch, viking, devil, etc. The skin I would prefer to use is the Mercy's Summer Games 2016 skin, but didn't play during summer so didn't get it, and it can't be bought, AND I don't think I would have used it so late into the game anyway as I chose Amber way before that one. So, I wish I had the Summer Games skin in my earlier levels so I could have used that one forever. That skin is the most looking healer skin she has, IMO.

Q8: So, you pay full price for a game and only experience a small part? That's stupid!
A8: Yup, which I sort of am for playing this way :) - but it's the way I've chosen and do it in all games.

Q9: But, by playing this way you won't learn the other classes and you are just gimping yourself!
A9: Nah, I don't need to play other classes to know what they can do. Same in Hearthstone.

Q10: Do you have autism?
A10: Meh, why do people keep asking this?. No, I don't (I think), I'm just weird and like to do things differently :P

Q11: I see you have over 40k gold and none of the characters' stuff maxed out. Why?
A11: Well, I only play Mercy and don't care about the stuff for any other character. You would think I would buy all the stuff I could for her so she's 81/81, but collecting stuff is nothing I care about. I already have the stuff I want for her and won't buy anything else. I'm the same when it comes to achievements, don't care for them. Not having to care about these things makes it more pleasant to play for me :), less stressful. Some achievements are maybe a one-time opportunity only and will never come again... I still won't get them.

So, yeah, don't want the golden weapon/staff skin, all the stuff for Mercy, achievements, play nothing else but QP. Yup, it truly is a waste of money playing this way! :D

Q12: Don't you get bored?
A12: Yes and no. I try to make it fun by being silly in the chat and hopefully get interesting replies/comments. One of my favs is pasting "Hi, I'm Ironclaw and I'm addicted to playing Mercy", then someone might check my profile and say something interesting :). I know there's players out there with way more Mercy hours than me, but who plays JUST Mercy? I've only seen me do that so far. Everyone else has hours in other characters.

Q13: Are you never tempted to play another character?
A13: I sure am. In the old days of Counter Strike and other similar games, sniper was my prefered choice. I would love to play as Widowmaker. I also like being sneaky, so the new Sombra could have been fun. But hey, I've chosen my way of playing and it will probably not change. Some people have told me they think I have a second account where I play all the other characters on, well, I don't. Like I said in the TL;DR at the bottom of the page: "I don't like splitting my time and effort over different characters. Better to do it with just one, makes it easier and faster to get a good geared character. And, as a bonus, I might get really good with him/her".

Q14: Do you like holding down LMB?
A14: Well, I don't hold it down, it's just a click beween healing and damage boosting. I do way more damage boosting than healing. So, it's more often RMB is active than LMB. I constantly switch between them tho. As soon as someone is full on health, I damage boost someone.

Q15: Gratz on 400h /w Mercy! Will you do one of those "This is what 400h with Mercy looks like!" videos?
A15: Nope, that shit is beneath me. I really hate all those kinds of videos. They simply make a compilation of clips where they do really good in various things, then add some stupid music and text to let people know what they were thinking at the time - like "yeah, here I noticed this and that and made the fast decision to do this and that" and stuff, which I think is usually BS and they just noticed those stuff afterwards, and people watching it think it's SOOO impressive and that they are a PRO player. Well, they might be good, but MOST players can do such video, even someone with maybe just 50 hours. We all have those moments where we do good every now and then, but putting them together into a video doesn't prove anything. Anyway, I will not do such video (even though it would probably get me a lot of views and some new subscribers, like everyone else gets who posts such videos). However, I am thinking of doing a different type of video, which is not to show off skills, but other stuff. You'll see when I get to it. Will probably add a link to it here.

Q16: All those hours on Mercy and with just one character? Get a life!
A16: I got comments like that even in the early 200s. Now I'm 730 and I get them more often. And I usually respond with something like "730 hours in Overwatch since the launch is nothing". Maybe they mean I should get a life because it's only ONE hero I play? Well, that still doesn't make sense. If I could have it my way, I would have had 2500+ hours by now, but having a life is a bitch.

Q17: Why don't you heal me in the starting room when I hurt myself on purpose for you?
A17: I used to heal people who did that, but as I get no ult from it and I'm tired of telling people that after I've healed them, I now instead DON'T heal them (so maybe it sinks in more... yeah, could be new people every time of course). I do heal you, but only after you've healed yourself first (as easy as going in and out). I'm sure you mean well doing this, who wouldn't want free ult, right? :) - it's just not how it works though. Thanks anyway. This is a question I should have added much earlier, but I add them as I think about them.

"Stop being such a lamer, Ironclaw. Just heal the guy instead. It only takes a few seconds" - No, becuase then they always do it again and again and again right after. It's really getting tiresome and it's better to lecture people about it so other healers out there won't run into the same behaviour from the guys I explain it to. Sometimes I just don't tell them (too lazy to tell, or even paste from quick-paste-macros), but then I just feel bad, like they think I'm a bad and mean Mercy for not healing them, and they say mean things :'(... understandably :)

Q18:
Do you think you are special and better than most other Mercy mains?
A18: Of course I don't. Well, I do see myself a little bit special as it's not common someone would literally play only one hero, and not a have a minute on any other hero. This is just the way I chose to play most games many years ago. I'm sure there are other Mercy mains out there with a profile just like mine. About being better than most other Mercy mains - I would say "no", as there are probably a lot of Mercy mains. I do consider myself pretty decent. I don't do comp and thus don't have a rank or a golden weapon skin, and those two things seems to be what people measure as skill. So I guess I have no skill.

Q19: Q2/A2 is not clear enough if you are a boy or girl.
A19: I'm a man, but can be quite immature/childish :)

Q20: What do you think about the new Mercy changes?
A20:
I mention them in this video, and also what I think about them.

BTW, for those of you who've been trying to say stuff to me via voice chat - I have had it turned off from day one, sorry. I've probably missed a lot of fun stuff and loads of compliments :P

EDIT #1 (22 Nov. 2016): It's a sad day today. What I once accidentally did with Reinhardt, I today did with Zarya :'(   LINK

EDIT #2 (2 Dec. 2016): And now I just got under 1 min on Mei! Dammit! This new system where we can't play as more than one unique character per team sucks. The game FORCES me to enter the game as someone else without my concent. Sucks when I join a game, which is ONGOING, and someone has already picked Mercy, if I hit escape to bring up the menu (to leave the game), BAM! I'm sent into the game with some lame other character. Need to ALT+F4 to be safe I guess, will try that next time... or wait till I get kicked for inactivity. Wish I knew what I know now when this new system first went live. I would have had only Rein then.

EDIT #3 (11 Feb. 2017): OK, I turned on Voice Chat for the first time ever (played since the beta). The reason is for entertainment purposes. I'm not talking, but could be fun to hear what people say, maybe they get salty and rage and stuff :)  (OK, 15 games later and no one says anything. Thought people talked more)

World of Warcraft
I guess this started in my early days of World of Warcraft. Being a healer was more my playstyle as I love being able to heal myself, surviving most things others wouldn't. This lead me to do a Priest Tank (never heard or seen anyone else do it before me). Made her as hard to kill as possible (Engineering helped), stacked health, resists, mained my favorite spells like shields, instant heals, HoTs etc. I didn't care about doing DPS, only survive. I had so much fun with this as I loved to mess around with the Horde. Running up to those mofos, getting the attention of several of them, running around while they try to kill me and imagine their confused faces in real life being like "WTF?! This Alliance scum just won't go down!". I made a name for myself, got very known.

I barely touched PvP arenas and raids; to which most players told me I should just quit WoW as there is nothing else to do, but to me there is. I did EVERYTHING else. Collecting mounts, looking for glitches/bugs, messing with players (love trolling), trying to solo things that normally required more than one player, etc. I did play a lot of Battlegrounds though, just to mess with the Horde. Didn't care about winning the games. Showing off is what I love to do. Got many awesome WoW videos on my YouTube channel where I do crazy things. Should link them here, but meh... too lazy, might come back to this text and do it later.

I've played WoW since beta, so 10+ years.

Diablo 3
I've done the same in every game since. In Diablo 3 I play as a female Monk, as it's the closest to a healer. Made me as tanky as possible and played in public on the hardest difficulty (in the beginning of D3, the max difficulty was much harder than now), where most people would get one-shotted. I ran around the map, gathered as many enemies as I could, then stood in one spot without moving (most "tank" players had to move to stay alive, I didn't) and dropped a flag to ping the others to teleport to my location... and DIE!! Muhahahaha! Was fun to see how long they survived. Those with slow computers didn't stand a chance and just stood there until they were dead, before the game even allowed them to do something. Also, the game had huge ms/latency problems back then (more than today) when there were too many enemies on the screen, so gathering these enemies made it unplayable for everyone else in the game (not me as I could survive the lag spikes). Of course, I only did this on softcore, I'm not a monster. Here's a video LINK. I used this build to tank for people in Rifts and stuff, and people often told me "LOL! Noob much? This is not WoW, you can't play as a tank in D3!", I could and did, and today it's a standard thing. Again, I like to play a bit different, as it's more fun, don't care about DPS, so I made a build just to hit fast, check this out: LINK. That was sooo much fun, especially in public games where people stopped doing whatever they did just to check me out :P My time in the games were short-lived though when they noticed I didn't do any damage :P  Same thing with my run speed build, LINK.

Hearthstone
Picked Priest, of course. I'm level 60 with her (was a him) and level 1 with everyone else, except the Mage, as I had to use her during the tutorial, so she's level 6 or something. Can't play Arena as what class I get to play is random, and can't do all the dailies, only those doable as a Priest. So, I'm in a bit of a disadvantage compared to all other players who play them all. Also, I have only 1 free quest slot. The other 2 are quests I can't do :/

Shroud of the Avatar
Being a fan of Ultima Online, SotA is a game I will soon start playing (probably after the last wipe on July 27th). Aaaaaaand, I'll play as a female healer. There's some gameplay videos on my YouTube channel.

Dragon Front (VR)
I'm playing as the Thorns faction, which is a female and they are nature based, healing and stuff. Done only 2 videos so far: LINK, LINK.

TL;DR
AIGHT!... OK, I prefer to play as a healer as I love being tanky, not dying easily, and to mess with the enemies. Can't in all games though, like Overwatch, but I will still only play as a healer, and just one character per game (got several in D3, but they are mules and different builds), and never try any other char, EVER.

Also, I don't like splitting my time and effort over different characters. Better to do it with just one, makes it easier and faster to get a good geared character. And, as a bonus, I might get really good with him/her.

I'm weird.
